How I got Interested in Web Site Design

I was introduced to the Macintosh Hypercard and the Internet when I took a course in Human Computer Interaction (HCI) for my Masters in Psychological Research Methods. For the course, I designed a simple program for the Mac. After completing my Masters I began teaching. I continued to pursue my interest in HCI and learned about html. Soon I got hooked on designing web pages and designed my faculty's web site - despite the hectic schedule as a young Lecturer.

I also took additional courses in html, web site design and xml. Along the way, I learned more about web site design and I continued practicing my skills so I wouldn't get lost in all the coding that I thought I would never understand.

My experience in web design has grown from html to php script. I also use Java Script and CSS. I like to design web pages from scratch because I have more freedom to design the way I like rather than be restricted to templates.

I always wanted to have my own web site. When I was unable to find the type of tote bag I liked, I decided that having one dedicated to bags was a good enough reason to create one. I soon got my website up and running selling handcrafted bags and accessories.

My ability to design a web site for my handmade bags gives me the opportunity to reach and sell to customers worldwide.

Today, after having resigned from my academic career, I design and handcraft a wide variety of women's sewn accessories like tote bags, purses, backpacks, etc. I also display and sell at the Ideas's gallery here in Malden, MA.

Having turned two interests into a business suits me fine - especially when I get bored with the repetitive tasks of designing and making bags, I can switch to updating my web site and taking on other web site design projets. When I complete web site design projects, I can return to making bags and accessories with a fresh mind - ready to make my next collection. Designing bags and web sites serves the same purpose - to express my creativity and freedom through design.
